1057 Barclay Street

History:

Gordon Nelson Inc.’s 1057 Barclay Street apartment building was built in the 1950’s.  It is located in Vancouver’s West End district.  In January 2007, Gordon Nelson Inc. bought the building, which was run down and in need of renovation and restoration.

Restoration and Renovation:

Gordon Nelson Inc. completed a full-scale renovation of all 29 junior one bedroom apartments as well as interior and exterior common areas.  The exterior was repainted to compliment the recently replaced new double glazed windows.  New environmentally friendly designer carpet tiles and baseboards were added in the hallways. The lobby mailbox cabinet was rebuilt, concrete lobby floor polished and new leather ottomans added. Gordon Nelson Inc. also utilized an extra basement storage room as a new exercise facility. Gordon Nelson Inc. re-landscaped the exterior of the building during the winter of 2007.

On the interior, all units received new kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks, faucets, Maytag and Frigidaire stainless steel appliances, Italian porcelain tiles on the floor, glass tiles on the back splash and a large mirror.

The living space is bright and open and has had the original oak hardwood floors refinished and stained chocolate brown.  New white baseboards were installed, new hardware on all doors, mirrored closet doors, 1″ venetian blinds and designer Benjamin Moore paint.   Storage cabinets and drapes were added to provide flexible bedroom space.

The bathroom drywall was refinished and repainted, bathtub surround replaced and retiled, new vanity mirror cabinets added and new shower heads installed.  In some of the units‚ sinks and toilets were also replaced.

Several units received new circuit breakers.  An electrical outlet was added to each bathroom and kitchen.  All lights, light switches and electrical outlets were replaced with contemporary finishes.  All units have also received hard-wired smoke detectors.

Heat and hot water is centrally provided by two new state-of-the-art ultra high efficiency IBC Technologies boilers.  Heat and hot water is included in rent.

All of Gordon Nelson Inc. apartment buildings are pet friendly, including dogs.

Overall, the renovated and restored building is sophisticated and matches the urban setting.
